Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

About Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang are general terms for two opposite aspects of matters and phenomena in the Nature which are interrelated and opposed to each other. They represent not only two different matters in opposition but two opposite aspects in the same entity. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, they are used to summarise and explain the problems in the fields of anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnosis, treatment etc. Generally speaking, matters and phenomena, which are dynamic, external, upward, ascending, brilliant, progressive, hyperactive, or pertaining to functional activities, belong to the category of Yang. Those which are static, internal, downward, descending, dull, retrogressive, hypoactive, or pertaining to materials, belong to that of Yin.

TCM Concept 1: Holistic

The holistic concept is based on the internal organs and the emotions being in a relationship. Everything in the body connects with each other and affects each other - they are in harmony. Therefore all changes in the body always relate to other tissues and organs in the whole body. The external environment, such as seasons, weather, society and geography, also connects to the human body .

TCM Concept 2: Organs and Channel Theory of Physiology and Pathology

The theory studying physiologic activities and pathologic changes of the Viscera and the relationships among various viscera tissue and structures of the human body. Channels are passages through which Qi and blood circulate. They correlate the viscera with the limbs, connect upper and lower parts with the interior and exterior of the body. They regulate the mechanisms of the parts of the body.

TCM Concept 3: Planning treatment according to diagnosis

Patient’s symptoms and signs, pathologic changes and body’s condition are analysed and put together to find the source of the problem and also locate it. According to diagnosis and analysis then a treatment can be applied.

These three concepts are the basis for all Traditional Chinese Medicine.
