Balancing Emotions for Health: Insights from Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) connects emotions to Qi and overall health.  Prolonged or intense emotions can disrupt Qi flow, impacting both mental and physical well-being.  Balancing emotions through awareness, avoiding excess and practices like Qi Gong help to regulate Qi movement and restore equilibrium.

TCM focuses on seven emotions: joy and excitement, sadness, grief, worry and overthinking, anger, shock and fear.  These are all normal human experiences that offer support and protection. However, problems arise when emotions become too intense, persist for too long or become difficult to manage, disrupting balance.

Emotions are felt internally and are influenced by external factors like climate, environment and relationships.  Understanding emotions through their impact on Qi movement can provide deeper insight.

Emotions and the Movement of Qi

Qi in the body flows in four fundamental directions: ascending, descending, opening and closing. Each emotion corresponds to a specific Qi movement direction. For instance, anger can cause Qi to rise and become forceful, while fear can lead to Qi withdrawal and descent. Shock disrupts normal Qi flow.

Prolonged emotional states can create mental or emotional stagnation, affecting mental well-being and physical health over time.

Joy and anger can elevate and open Qi, while overthinking, sadness and grief can cause stagnation or blockage. Fear and shock can lead to Qi descent or withdrawal.

The key is for these four movements to flow freely both physically and mentally. Extreme or prolonged emotions can deplete Qi and disrupt its natural flow. For example, prolonged sadness or depression can lead to increasing emotional stagnation.

How can we achieve emotional balance for improved health?

The first step towards emotional wellbeing is becoming aware of our emotions.  The next is to avoid letting them become excessive or linger too long.

To support this process, consider these simple things:

  • Reduce excessive alcohol consumption

  • Maintain a regular daily routine

  • Exercise regularly

  • Talk to someone you trust

  • Spend time in nature

  • Practice Qi Gong

Practising helps regulate the flow of Qi and restores balance.  Through practice, we become more attuned to both our body and emotional state.

Qi Gong offers a practical way to shift our focus from the mind back to the body.  The goal isn’t to suppress emotions but to encourage the mind and energy to flow rather than stagnate.
